Dr. Samuel Hensley Cortez Scholarship
This scholarship award is made to honor Dr. Samuel H. Cortez, who came to Fullerton with his wife Elsie Yates Cortez in 1934. After serving as a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy during WWII, he returned to his post as Professor of Physics. He died in 1957. The endowment was established by his three children, Patricia Cortez Bertelli, Karen Cortez Klaustermeyer and Dr. Douglas Hensley Cortez.
This award is made to top FCC students majoring in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics/Computer Science with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and carrying a course load of 12 units or more. The award is based on academic achievement first and financial need as secondary factor. The awardee must be in their second year of study at FCC, completed the first year courses in their chosen major, and planning to transfer to a four-year college or university. The award is available only to US Citizens and without regard to race, religion, ethnic origin, gender, or sexual orientation.
The recommendations for the award shall be made by the Scholarship Committees of the Engineering, Physical Sciences, and/or Mathematics/Computer Sciences Department.
